CHAPTER THIRTY

ATAMA TURNED HIS head. He’d just finished searching the second bedroom when he sensed, not heard, someone coming up the stairs. Someone quiet, stealthy, dangerous, and definitely not Karl. He turned and moved along the wall towards the door, feeling every footstep before he put his full weight down to make sure it didn’t creak and give his position away. He waited to one side of the doorway, listening, the sound of his own breathing and his heart pounding making it hard to tell if he could hear breathing on the other side of the wall. Counting to three in his head, Atama spun into the doorway. A silhouette moved in identical synchronicity, spinning around in front of him as if he were looking in a mirror. Both men reacted by darting a hand forward, catching the barrel of each other’s rifles and pushing them skywards as they pulled the triggers. A stream of metallic pings echoed off the walls as plaster from the bullet-riddled ceiling rained down on them. Expelled bullet casings bounced off the walls before tumbling to the floor.

Both guns emptied in seconds.

Danny powered his head forward as the last casing hit the ground, headbutting Atama square on the bridge of his nose, sending him flying back into the bedroom, his empty rifle clattering to the ground. But Atama didn’t go down. He snorted the blood from his broken nose and spat it on the floor. Standing ready to attack, Atama drew a six-inch commando knife from his tactical vest. Danny dropped his rifle, reached into his jacket, and pulled out a kitchen knife. He moved inside the room as the clouds outside cleared, the moon’s glow pouring in through the windows, lighting them up with silvery outlines. Both men circled each other, looking for an opening, both having to believe one hundred percent that they were better than the other man.

Atama broke first, a silver blur cutting through the air, the blade slicing through the fabric of Danny’s jacket as he jumped back. Countering as Atama’s blade moved away, Danny stabbed forward, his blade digging into Atama’s tactical vest but failing to cut through the kevlar lining. Atama came back with lightning speed, his knife sparking as Danny shot the kitchen knife into its path, locking blades with a grating metallic scrape. They both held the tension, muscle pushing against muscle as their predatory eyes stayed locked in the moonlit room. Atama swung a knee into Danny’s side. Danny tensed to keep from crumpling, and powered a fist into Atama’s already broken nose, sending him staggering back, fighting the watery tears filling his eyes.

Outside, the clouds floated back across the moon, sucking the light out of the room until both men were barely visible. Without taking his eyes off Atama, Danny stepped back away from the window, his outline swallowed in the inky black space at the back of the room. Still staring in Danny’s direction with the commando knife raised, Atama pinched the bridge
